DAY 2PHNOM PENH CITY TOUR [B]
 Breakfast at hotel

In the morning, head out to the Choeung Ek Memorial, where a stupa made up of some 8,000 human skulls marks the site of the infamous Killing Fields. This was the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng and standing in this peaceful setting it’s almost unthinkable to imagine that to date nearly 9,000 corpses have been exhumed from the area. Confront Cambodia’s tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school that served as a Khmer Rouge torture center. It’s estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL – SIEM REAP [L/D]
Upon arrival at Siem Reap International Airport, you will be welcomed by our tour guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in.

From there, the tour will start with a visit to the Roluos Group. These monuments are some of the earliest temples built by the Khmer Empire and mark the beginning of the classical period. It served as the capital of Indravarman (who reigned from 877 to 889). Lolei Temple was built on an islet by Yasovarman I (who ruled from 889 to 910), the founder of the first city of Angkor. The sandstone carvings in the niches of the temples are notable as are the Sanskrit inscription on the doorposts. Preah Ko Temple was erected by Indravrman I in the late 9th century in dedication to his defied ancestors in 880. There are inscriptions in Sanskrit on the doorsteps of each temple. Bakong Temple was built by Indravarman in dedication to Shiva and is the largest and most interesting of the Roluos Group of temples and still has an active Buddhist monastery.

In the afternoon, the tour will visit Banteay Srei Temple, a temple that seems small in comparison to the other Angkor temples. However, Banteay Srei is considered to be the jewel of classical Khmer art. Built with pink sandstone, the walls are covered in exquisitely preserved carvings of unusual delicacy. Due to its small size, otherworldly atmosphere, and extraordinary examples of Khmer sculpture, this temple is often a favorite among visitors. To conclude the day, you will visit  Banteay Samre Temple before returning to the hotel. Overnight in Siem Reap.

DAY 2SIEM REAP TEMPLE TOUR [B/L]
Breakfast will be eaten at your hotel, then you will begin your tour of the crowning jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat Temple which is the national symbol of Cambodia. The largest, best-preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor Temples, Angkor impresses visitors with both its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. Approaching the temple, you will first cross the vast moat, and continue along a broad causeway lined with Naga balustrades.

As you enter the main building, you will ascend through a series of galleries and courtyards before reaching the central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over the causeway and across the surrounding countryside. Following this, you will travel to Ta Prohm Temple, another popular attraction in Angkor. Much of the jungle has not been clear which the leaves this, of all the Angkor monuments; closest to how it would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across it.

In the afternoon, you will visit Angkor Thom, which covers an area of 10 square kilometers. Enclosed by a wall and wide moats; the city includes many of Angkor’s most popular sights. You will enter by the monumental south gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, each carrying a giant naga. Then, you will continue to the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King, both former spaces for public ceremonies, and both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs. Next, you will visit the ruined Baphun, royal enclosure, and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple. In this temple, you will explore the galleries of beautifully preserved bas reliefs and ascend the narrow stairs to reach the central sanctuary, where you will find hundreds of giant stone face smiling enigmatically down at you from every angle.

You will see traditional stilted houses standing over the water’s surface. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3,000 inhabitants, most of whom live all year round in these communities. The people depend largely on fishing and tourism for their incomes. You will travel by traditional wooden boat through the flooded forests of the great Tonle Sap Lake, a habitat for many bird species. The houses in this amazing floating village are primarily built on 8 to 10 meter high stilts. We will visit an island pagoda, a school, and traditional stilt houses to interact with local families.  Breakfast at your hotel, our guide will escort you to Battambong Province

The best part about the bamboo train is when two trains face off on one track and the one with the less heavy load is forced to dismantle and let the other one pass. Visit to Phnom Sampeou is a mountain with a temple, Wat Sampeou, at the top, from which you can enjoy the best view in all of Battambang of the city and the surrounding countryside. The mountain also features Khmer Rouge killing caves, where Khmer Rouge soldiers apparently murdered their victims by pushing them from a high ledge. Neither the caves nor the pagoda are particularly interesting, and visitors will encounter a fair number of donation requests, but it’s worth going for the view.

You’ll get dropped off at the bottom of the mountain and can walk up (it’s easier than taking the stairs). The walk can be done in flip-flops, but shoes make it easier. The entire walk takes about an hour and is not particularly difficult, although the easiest way to get back down is by a steep set of stairs. Around 6 p.m. each night thousands upon thousands of bats stream out of the caves and make a pretty impressive sight. You’ll get the best view of the bat exodus from the road below the mountain.
DAY 5BATTAMBONG – PHNOM PENH by Van with guide

It’s estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. Lunch not included
